The recombinant human PROC comprises 454 amino acids and has a predicted molecular mass of 51.5 kDa. The apparent molecular mass of the protein is approximately 56-64 and 45 kDa in SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions due to glycosylation.

PROC, also known as protein C and coagulation factor XIV, is a zymogenic (inactive) protein. Its activated form is a vitamin K-dependent serine protease which belongs the peptidase S1 family. PROC's activated form plays an important role in regulating blood clotting, inflammation, cell death, and maintaining the permeability of blood vessel walls in humans and other animals. PROC contains a two-chain polypeptide consisting of a light chain and a heavy chain connected by a disulfide bond. Defects in PROC cause thrombophilia which is a hemostatic disorder characterized by impaired regulation of blood coagulation and a tendency to recurrent venous thrombosis.
